New McKinsey Report Spotlights Executive Director Jenn Hoos Rothberg on the Three Essential Skills of a Successful Philanthropy CEO

Grantmaking Strategy: Belonging

We’re proud to share that our Executive Director Jenn Hoos Rothberg is featured in a new report from McKinsey & Company titled “Conviction and Connection: What Makes a Great Philanthropy CEO,” exploring what it takes to lead effectively in the philanthropic sector.

Through in-depth interviews with 23 philanthropic CEOs — each of whom was named by their peers as someone they admired in the sector — McKinsey identified three distinct skills that set excellent leaders apart: discernment, relational intelligence, and storytelling. These abilities help CEOs navigate the opportunities, challenges, and uncertainty of social change work to achieve the long-term missions and visions of their organizations.

Jenn’s reflections in the report give a view into how she exemplifies these skills and incorporates them into every aspect of our work, from our internal team culture to our collaborative efforts to address the crisis of human connection.

We encourage you to read the full McKinsey report. We hope it helps spark a conversation about what it takes to be an effective leader in philanthropy and how these essential skills can be honed to maximize the organization’s impact.

I would not be able to succeed in my role if my whole self was not truly part of every single thing I’ve done at the organization. My story is deeply tied to the story of the organization. I’m grateful that I get to wake up every day and advance a mission that’s so deeply human and true to what I’ve come to believe is my life’s purpose.
